Eclectus parrot flying The young Eclectus learn to fly at 12 weeks old. In the wild, they love to screech when they fly and they are strong fliers. They will travel far from their roosting sites in search of food.

Eclectus parrot playing All parrots need lots of toys to keep them busy. The toys have to be replaced from time to time, because they destroy them. In this photo, you can see Sam, the Eclectus parrot, playing with his new toys.

Female Eclectus The female Eclectus is very beautifully colored. She has a rich red on the head and breast, while the back and wing feathers tend to a darker red. The belly and the nape of the neck are a dull purple to blue and the tail is tipped with orange. Their beak is black. You can see all the lovely colors of the female Eclectus in this photo.

Male and female Eclectus babies If possible, the male and female baby Eclectus parrots should be raised together, if you later intend to breed them. If they are paired at a later time, allowing them to select their mate increases the likelihood of successful breeding.

Just curious..... I'm thinking about getting one & my gf wants a parrot too. We have an congo african grey that we inherited that is awesome & sweet but we kinda want one parrot of our own each cause we love birds soo much..... but I want a female & she really likes the male colors (opposites really do attract even in the birdy world) any who my question is if we got a male & a female maybe brother & sister if we kept them in seprate cages & just let them play togeather once older would they just bond to them selves & try to breed or with a lot of traing & playing can they still make companion pets...... I was kinda thinkin or hopin if they were related & knew eachother from the start as I am good at hand feeding they wouldn't have the urge to breed or is this a strong, semi strong or not poss situation, I am very good at training, diet & custom build play stands & have an aviary for sumout door fly/play time! Any in put would he'll as they are one of the few birds I have ever owned or worked with (worked for a breeder & bird store for a while) but never had much expierence with them esp babies, thanks!

Eclectus parrot in her cage The Eclectus needs a cage that is approximately 39"- 59" high and have a floor space of 23"x 39". This will give them lots of room to move around. Also, include perches, food dishes and a variety of playthings.

Female Eclectus parrot playing The Eclectus parrot needs a lot of exercise and playtime for its physical well-being and psychological health. These activities prevent problems like screeching and feather picking. Provide your parrot with lots of toys in the form of large link chains, bird ladders, parrot swings, ropes, fresh branches for gnawing and chewing and rotate new bird toys on a regular basis.

Handfeeding a baby Eclectus parrot

breeding eclectus
Handfeeding a baby Eclectus parrot Baby Eclectus parrots are said to be the "hardest to feed". This refers to the limited feeding response of the babies. Parrot breeders are usually shocked to discover that Eclectus babies sometimes just sit there, not very interested in eating. If the baby is hungry, it will swallow the food, but otherwise, the formula will simply drool down its chest.

Male Eclectus in flight There are nine (possibly more) subspecies of Eclectus parrots and the differences are very subtle. This makes the subspecies of the male Eclectus almost impossible for the novice to determine. The parrot in the picture is an Eclectus Roratus.
